After prepositioning hundreds of NFA rice to six towns in preparation for Typhoon Ompong, the local government of Batanes said it is left with only 1,000 sacks of the more affordable grains—an amount that may last for nine days.

According to Raffy Tima's report on "24 Oras", the national government vowed to provide the province additional supply of NFA rice after the typhoon.

Prices of noodles and canned goods also increased as Ompong may threatened the province.

Governor Marilou Cayco said the prepositioning of relief goods started last week.

Meanwhile, residents have started to prepare their houses for the strong winds which will be brought by Ompong.

Officials of Barangay Itbud are also extending assistance to residents in preparing their houses.

In its 5 p.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said Ompong was located at 1,145 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes packing maximum sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 255 kilometers per hour.

It is forecasted to threaten Northern Luzon and may also cause storm surge in coastal areas in Cagayan province.

PAGASA said Ompong would make landfall in the northern tip of Cagayan on Saturday and would exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Sunday afternoon. —Anna Felicia Bajo/NB, GMA News
