Typhoon Mangkhut, which was still outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility late Monday night, had intensified further even as it continued to make its way westwards, PAGASA reported in an 11 p.m. advisory.

At 10 p.m., Mangkhut was 2,135 kilometers east of southern Luzon, and had 160 kilometer per hour sustained winds which could gust up to 195 kph.

With Mangkhut moving westwards at 25 kph, the typhoon would likely enter the PAR by Wednesday evening and be locally named Ompong.

The typhoon, at this point with 205 kph winds and 255 kph gusts, would then make its way towards northern Luzon.

Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal Number 1 would likely be raised over the Cagayan Valley Region as early as Thursday (13 September).

By Friday (14 September), the typhoon would bring widespread moderate to heavy rain over northern Luzon, particularly over Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Ilocos Norte, and the Batanes.

By Saturday (15 September), the typhoon would begin traversing the Cagayan-Batanes area.

Mangkhut would likely still be a typhoon by Saturday evening, when it would be 250 kms northwest of Aparri, Cagayan. — DVM, GMA News
