German manufacturer Audi has unveiled the second generation of its A7 Sportback premium coupe.

Following on from the first version, which was released in 2010, the latest model draws much of its design and technical features from the recently unveiled A8 premium saloon – such as the autonomous technology and mild-hybrid system.

It also shares a large number of design cues with the A8, as the grille is largely similar in shape but has been lowered and widened for a more dynamic appearance.

Inside you will find a driver-focused setup that has two central touchscreens, angled more towards the driver than usual, while Audi's Virtual Cockpit display behind the steering wheel comes as standard. The A7 has a premium interior finish that conveys the same luxury as the A8.

Despite the overall size of the vehicle being slightly smaller than the first generation, there is actually more interior space with legroom being extended by 21mm in the rear while the headroom remains almost the same as before.

Under the bonnet the A7 will be launched with a 335bhp V6 engine paired to a 48V electrical system – making the coupe a mild hybrid. The electrical system can allow the vehicle to coast and save fuel between 34mph and 99mph while the car is cruising, and also run the vehicle at speeds up to 12mph whilst in traffic. The top speed of the launch model is 155mph and can achieve 60mph from standstill in 5.1 seconds. Other four- and six-cylinder units will be made available shortly after the model is launched.

The self-raising rear wing stays from the previous model and raises at 74mph to provide more downforce and stability when cruising at a higher speed where permitted.

Providing excellent storage, the A7 has 535 litres of boot space, which can be extended to 1,390 litres with the rear bench folded down.

The A7 Sportback will be available to order from the first quarter of 2018, with deliveries beginning later in the year. Prices start from £61,000 in the UK.
