PETALING JAYA: Good news for car buyers. Car prices will remain lower when September comes, according to a proposed Customs Department list posted on its website.

This is because passenger vehicles, auto parts and accessories will be exempted from sales tax.

Car makers were caught unawares by the surprise move. They are still scrambling to digest the windfall for the industry.

So far, Volkswagen is among the first to say it will issue a statement on the matter soon.

Just yesterday MAA president Datuk Aishah Ahmad was pessimistic about 2018 car sales as the association had expected the 10% sales tax to dampen sales.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng on Tuesday announced that under the re-introduced sales and services tax (SST) from Sept 1, services will be taxed at 6%, while the sale of goods will incur a 10% tax.
