SUBANG JAYA: Proton announced today that it will reimburse customers should there be a drop in car prices following the abolition of the Goods & Service Tax (GST) under the Pakatan Harapan government.

The reimbursement would be in the form of service vouchers.

If prices rise instead, customers will not be asked to pay the difference between the new and old price, provided their cars have been registered before the end of June, Proton said when announcing its Proton Price Guaranteed initiative.

Running concurrently with its other sales promotions for the rest of May and up to 30 June 2018, prices of Proton vehicles will be maintained regardless of any changes to the government’s policy on GST.

Proton made the announcement in a move to keep up the sales momentum following a lack of clarity on the GST issue, which could result in customers holding back on buying and registering new cars in anticipation of a possible reduction in car prices.

If an announcement regarding the abolishment of GST is not made by the end of June, Proton said it would review its pricing and might even extend it.

“Proton is supportive of the new Malaysian government’s efforts to reduce the cost of living for the rakyat,” said Proton sales & marketing vice-president Abdul Rashid Musa.

“We will be guided by any new guidelines announced but in the interim, we would like to make this gesture to cushion our customers from any possible increases in car prices or reimburse them the difference if they should fall.”
