It’s tradition for grieving widows to wear black. But clearly no one told Celine Dion . For while she has always been glamorous, she had for years been a conservative dresser.

Yet as she stepped out in a wild all-white ensemble this week, it was clear something has changed.

Just last month, she was in Paris carrying a £79,000 Hermes handbag along with pearl-studded shoes designed by rapper Kanye West , leather dungarees and diamanté encrusted sunglasses.

She wore a white T-shirt with the words “the biggest p***k” scrawled across the sleeve on stage in Copenhagen last month, and she stripped naked for fashion magazine Vogue .

Then there is her new love of “flower power” suits , which could give Harry Styles ’ ensembles a run for their money.

But while some have dismissed this as Celine just having fun, others point to the grief she still feels having lost both her husband Rene Angelil and her brother Daniel to cancer within two days of each other in January last year.

Celine, 49, claims her husband’s spirit is at her side and talks to him.

Lucy Beresford, relationship expert and bereavement therapist, believes that this, coupled with her eccentric dress sense, could be a way for Celine’s immense grief to pour out.

And while it’s understandable, Lucy hopes her friends are looking out for her. Celine has confessed: “I think I’ll probably grieve for the rest of my life.”

Now Lucy warns: “With her fashion displays and her striking outfits, it could be a mask.

“These staggering clothes could be her way of hiding her pain behind a new persona.”

And she adds: “But is she enjoying a new lease of life, which nobody would begrudge, or is she going off the rails?”

Lucy also points to Celine’s spending. The handbag alone seems somewhat extreme. She says: “Loving yourself and treating yourself can be good but her spending seems quite relentless.

“There is quite a big pattern of behaviour here. If it becomes a habit and she is frittering money away, it might start to ring alarm bells.”

Celine struggling with the loss is understandable. She met music mogul Rene Angelil in Canada when she was just 12 years old and he became her manager.

Celine grew into one of the best-selling artists of all time with record sales of more than 200 million worldwide from hits such as My Heart Will Go On, Think Twice and The Power of Love.

She and Rene fell in love and married in 1994 despite a 26-year age gap . They had three sons. Rene-Charles is now 16 while twins Eddy and Nelson are six.

Rene, after a battle with head and neck cancer, planned to pass away in his wife’s arms but he was found dead by his nurse after falling out of bed.

Celine is “haunted” by the thought that he may have been injured.

His death, just two days before his 74th birthday, hit Celine hard. She was “too devastated” to attend the funeral of brother Daniel Dion, who died from throat cancer just two days after Celine’s husband.

She said: “Rene has prepared me for all my life since I was 12. I have never kissed another man. I miss him a lot.”

Celine wore a black dress and veil for Rene’s funeral at Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal, Canada, where they had exchanged vows 22 years earlier.

But now she is expressing herself through her clothes in a whole new way.

And she has even hired celebrity stylist Law Roach to help with her extreme makeover.

He said: “She credits me and the clothes, and shoes and bags and jewellery , and all that to helping her through her grieving.”

Roach told how Celine has a wardrobe “packed full of designer shoes, Hermes bags in every colour, and samples from her upcoming fashion collection”.

Lucy, from radio station LBC, adds: “Part of me wonders if Celine has watched Rene die and thought, ‘You can’t take all that money with you, I might as well have a lot of fun with it’.”

Celine’s fashion sense is not the only thing that has changed. She was previously averse to tattoos but has talked about having her husband’s heartbeat inked on her body.

She has also sought refuge in her work, performing for at least two hours a night, five or six times a week. In October, she told a Caesars Palace crowd in Las Vegas she can still feel her husband’s presence.

She explained: “My wonderful husband is here tonight with us. I am so sure.”

And on the first anniversary of his death, she posted on Facebook: “My heart keeps calling you. I know you can hear me. And I hear you, too.”

Celine even turned to her husband’s portrait for advice over whether to record How Does A Moment Last Forever for the Beauty and The Beast movie, her first new song since his death.

Celine said: “I found one of the paintings a fan gave me and I said, ‘Should I do this?’ And the answer I got – and I don’t want that to sound ghostly – but emotionally what I got back from that was, ‘You’ve nothing to lose’.”
