KUALA LUMPUR: British music fans have singled out American singer Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You as the most annoying Christmas song ever.

Variety magazine reported yesterday that the Grammy winner’s 1994 single topped a recent poll conducted by mobile phone company Huawei.

All I Want is ubiquitous enough worldwide, that it would probably come in near the top of any survey of favourite songs, too.

But unfortunately, it has not been in the good books of the British who dread the music of December.

The rest of the UK’s Most Annoying Holiday Songs list is decidedly British-centric, with the Band-Aid charity song Do They Know It’s Christmas? coming in second.

A couple of holiday songs from British rock stars of the 1970s, Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday and Slade’s Merry Xmas Everybody are in the third and fourth positions respectively.

Last Christmas by Wham! which would often top any scientific poll, came in fifth.

Fairytale Of New York by the Pogues with Kirsty MacColl came in sixth and at the seventh position is Baby, It's Cold Outside performed by Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews.

The Jackson 5's Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Eartha Kitt's Santa Baby and the Andrews Sisters' Jingle Bells came in eighth, ninth and 10th respectively.

All I Want is the last original holiday song to have really become a Christmas standard. It is part of Carey's popular 1994 album Merry Christmas, but has never reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Nevertheless, it reached No. 3 last year. Carey later released a duet version of the song with Justin Bieber in 2011, and it has also been covered by Kelly Clarkson, My Chemical Romance, Michael Buble, Fifth Harmony, Lady Antebellum, Ariana Grande, Idina Menzel and LeAnn Rimes.

Leading British newspaper The Guardian's Most Annoying Holiday Songs poll for this year placed All I Want at No. 20. Its readers' No. 1 pick was Bing Crosby's and David Bowie's Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth.
