The American actor died in 2011 at the age of 60 after being discovered unconscious due to pneumonia and sepsis and was subsequently placed in an induced coma from which he never woke up.

Over the years, the star - who played Kenickie in the 1978 classic alongside John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John - struggled with drugs with new documentary Autopsy: The Last Hours Of… claiming the actor was hooked on 12 prescription drugs, including powerful opioid painkillers.

Jeff’s problems are said to have originated after he suffered an injury to his back while performing in the Greased Lightning dance scene.

The documentary - which is set to air in the UK later this year - draws a link between the incident (which was reportedly exacerbated by the actor when he lifted boxes at home after filming) and Jeff’s dependency on drugs.

“This incredibly high consumption inevitably led to a myriad of overlapping health problems,” American pathologist, Dr Michael Hunter, tells the documentary.

“He was playing a daily game of Russian roulette with his life,” the doctor continues as he discusses Jeff’s well-documented drug abuse.

The doctor goes on to give a bleak diagnosis of Jeff’s chances had he recovered from his induced coma in 2011.

“Even if Jeff had emerged from his coma, I believe he would most likely have been dead within a matter of years at the most,” the expert concludes.

Jeff was close to Grease co-stars John, 65, and Olivia, 70.

He even embarked on a romance and marriage to Olivia’s sister, Rona Newton-John, but the marriage ended after five years in 1985.
