The Best Movies You Didn't See in 2016

In terms of box office gross, 2016 is shaping up to be one of the most profitable years in movie history. As of Dec. 11, the cumulative box office gross for the year has surpassed $10 billion, outpacing 2015 by 3.9 percent.

With "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" still on the way, that number is poised to climb even higher. But for every mega-blockbuster hit, there are bound to be films that slipped through the box office cracks. With that in mind, PrettyFamous, an entertainment data site by Graphiq, found the best hidden gems you may have missed.

To create this ranking, the data experts looked at films that made less than $12 million at the U.S. box office (as of Dec. 12) and ranked them by their Smart Rating. The Smart Rating is a score out of 100 that takes into account a movie’s IMDb rating, Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and Audience Score, Gracenote rating and Metacritic score. Movies had to have at least 100 IMDb votes to qualify. Films missing a score on either Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb or Metacritic were also excluded.

Normally, box office totals are also factored into the Smart Rating, but PrettyFamous excluded those figures in this case since the numbers are inherently low. PrettyFamous also included each film's initial release date.

Whether you’re looking for a sci-fi thriller (“Midnight Special”), historical drama (“Denial") or quirky comedy (“Hunt for the Wilderpeople”), here are the 2016 movies any true film buff should see.

Note: Some of these movies are fairly new releases, so as of the time of publishing may still have time to pick up steam. Additionally, some of the indie films in the ranking have only had limited releases, which results in lower box office totals. Movie descriptions were sourced (with minor edits) from Gracenote.
