It's been a long time coming for Black Widow (aka Natasha Romanoff) fans. The Marvel studio is finally moving forward with their plans for the standalone film, played by Scarlett Johansson.

According to Variety, Marvel has appointed a screenwriter to the project – Jac Schaeffer. Jac wrote the upcoming female-led film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, featuring Rebel Wilson.

A Black Widow film is still in the very early stages and hasn't yet been officially greenlit.

In 2016, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige hinted at the film, saying: "Where we go beyond [our next nine films] are ongoing discussions."

"I would say certainly the one, creatively and emotionally, that we are most committed to doing is Black Widow."

With Brie Larson taking on Captain Marvel in a standalone film, a Harley Quinn movie on the horizon AND Gotham City Sirens (focusing on Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Poison Ivy), it's about time we saw Black Widow get a shot at the limelight.

Scarlett's character was first introduced in 2010 in Iron Man 2 and has been a prominent character in The Avengers films, as well as Captain America. Avengers: Infinity War (coming out in April) will be her sixth time in the role.
