Street style has increasingly made its mark on the runways. Born out of a creative rebellion from urban youths, it necessitates eclecticism – plus a subtle, more casual sense of sophistication.

Sporty embellishments, well-recognised iconography, casual silhouettes. Put them all together and you have a universal fashion genre that speaks to different subcultures and lifestyles.

Luxury labels have even embraced street style as a trend. It is seen as a way for them to engage with the next-generation consumers, while at the same time ensuring that their legacy lives on.

Here, we take a look at the elements that define the look.

Street style can be interpreted in many different ways. It is about the overall attitude of a look, more than anything else. The aim is to express your subversive and rebellious side without any constraint.

Wear all your favourite things at once, for instance. This works well when you need to show off your personality to the max. Think hip and trendy, but loud and off-kilter at the same time.

Those who prefer the grunge look can incorporate a darker, edgier vibe into their wardrobe. Otherwise pair materials like leather and denim as a modern tribute to the 1940s rock ‘n’ roll glory days.

Don’t forget that “street” can also be sophisticated. Just look to some of the fashion capitals around the world. New Yorkers are famed for having a statement-making, chic sense of everyday style.

Music, history, pop culture and much more have been inspiring designers for the longest time. Street style draws from the same subjects, but with the addition of a contemporary feel.

At times, the guests of runway shows can be just as much of a big focus as the season’s collections. Pictures of stylish show goers on the street are now everywhere in fashion. And it is this charm of informal dressing that has made street style such a hit.

What do celebrities like Selena Gomez, Alexa Chung, Gigi Hadid and Rihanna have in common? All of them have a killer style on the streets. It is their off-duty looks that connect best with fans.

Of course, a stylist would have probably coordinated most of what they wore. But unlike red carpet dressing (which are polished to perfection), street style brings these stars closer to reality.

The true brilliance of street style look is found in the accessories. Pick ones that have a personality. Quirky designs denote sartorial cleverness and can elevate even the simplest of looks.

Vintage-looking bags can work in contrasting against a strong, modern look. It is this idea of rocking old-school items in new ways that will set a person apart from the usual fashion crowds.

Also remember to go for functional and fun pieces that can fit all occasions. Art-inspired shoes and jewellery pieces, among others, will definitely make a lasting impression on the sidewalks.
