Keeping cool in the spring and summer can be hard. Unless you’re fortunate enough to have air conditioning and a swimming pool, you might have to make do with a cold shower, a colder beer, and a fan. Not all fans are created equal, though. Some fans seem like they were designed solely to look ugly and make lots of noise while producing absolutely no cold air.

Fortunately, these fans are better than that. Whether you’re looking for a tall tower fan, a small floor fan, or something in between, it’s possible to cool off without air conditioning. Now, if only you could figure out if a fan in the window is supposed to face inside or out.

1. Lasko Wind Curve Tower Fan

The last thing you want to do when it’s hot is move, and Lasko gets that. That’s why their tower fan has a remote control. It also comes with a fresh air Ionizer; the fan can emit negative ions that reduce static electricity and trap air pollutants. As for cooling power, it was described as being able to cool a humid room — one reviewer from Louisiana even described it as if “an angel had come down from heaven and began to personally blow cool air on my face.”

2. Lasko 18″ Remote Control Cyclone Pedestal

Having a fan that blows air too high or too low is basically pointless. This Lasko fan has an adjustable stand and a tiltable head, so you can get the perfect airflow whether you’re on the couch, in bed, or standing in the kitchen. Like Lasko’s tower model, this pedestal fan is also remote controlled. It requires no tools to assemble, which is great for when it’s too hot to think. People commented positively on the cooling power but noted that it’s not an especially quiet model, so this would make a good bedtime fan for those who like to sleep with background noise.

3. Honeywell Air Circulator Fan

For a simple, quiet, and effective table or floor fan, Honeywell’s fan is an affordable choice. If you don’t have space for a tower fan, you can prop this up on any table to cool off while watching TV or going to sleep. It has 3 settings and a pivoting head, which allows it to be adjusted exactly to your needs.
