A contemporary yet elegant, sporty design, a keen attention to details and a vintage touch are the main elements that make up Jaeger-LeCoultre’s new polaris collection.

Inspired by the iconic Memovox polaris watch from 1968, the new collection is not just a single homage to a historical reference, it embodies the spirit of Memovox polaris and applies it to today’s man with a full range of timepieces: a three-hand automatic, a chronograph and a chronograph world time, and two models with a stronger vintage feel, namely the Jaeger-LeCoultre polaris date and the Jaeger-LeCoultre polaris Memovox.

The 1968 Memovox polaris watch, instantly recognisable by its three crowns, echoes the bold and adventurous spirit of the 1960s – synonymous with freedom and avant-garde, polaris also heralds a revolution: a diving watch, fitted with an alarm function, featuring a patented triple case-back to amplify its sound underwater.

Back in the day, this spirit was summarised with a slogan: “for the man of action”. Between 1965 and 1968, 1,714 Memovox polaris ii pieces were produced.

The 2018 Jaeger-LeCoultre polaris model has been entirely redesigned: the lugs are shorter and the bezel is slimmer, making the watch more contemporary with clear readability. The polished and brushed finishing enhances the line’s sporty spirit, and the plexiglas has been replaced by sapphire crystal.

The back of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Memovox

The dial architecture in the Jaeger-LeCoultre polaris collection is distinctive, combining a mixture of finishings on three concentric circles: a Memovox polaris inspired centre with a sunray finish, graining on the outer circle with the hours and minutes, and an opaline finish on the rotating inner bezel.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre logo is applied, as are the classic Arabic numbers and the contemporary trapezoidal indexes. The hands are large and filled with Super-Luminova ™ © STARSONLINE - Produção de Conteúdos, Lda. * for excellent visibility in low light.

Historically black, the new Jaeger-LeCoultre polaris is offered in a black or ocean blue dial, giving it a sense of urban elegance, while the cases are brand new, with proportions designed for an elegant sports watch. They feature an eyecatching combination of brushed and hand-polished surfaces, with sharp, plunging lugs and thin, rounded bezels. The large crowns, emblematic of the 1968 model, have been redesigned for better grip.

A newly designed three-link metal bracelet with polished and brushed finished surfaces is ergonomic and comfortable, and the straps are interchangeable for both alligator leather and calfskin. The latter is offered in both a light and dark brown version with an aged leather patina. A new graphic folding buckle featured on leather straps echoes the case design with a combination of polished and brushed surfaces.

A piece perfect for travel

The polaris Geographic WT (for “World Time”), limited to 250 pieces, is exclusively available at Jaeger-LeCoultre boutiques. While the watch’s completely redesigned curves give it an air of sporty elegance for daily wear and a cosmopolitan outlook, its bold, adventurous spirit remains unchanged.

The 42 mm case houses the Calibre 936A/1, a mechanical self-winding Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre bringing a new feature to the collection: the geographic function, ideal for both travellers and men of action.

Discover the world through the 24 time zones instantly visible on a flange, which can be adjusted by the crown at 10 o’clock. for cities switching between standard and daylight saving time according to seasons, a white asterisk indicates the time with this one-hour difference.

The smoky blue dial gives the polaris Geographic WT watch the impression of great depth. it is decorated with three finishes: an opaline base for the city disk, a sunrayed sub-dial housing the calendar at 2 o’clock, the second time zone at 6 o’clock and the power reserve at 10 o’clock, and a grained finishing for the case back.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Geographic WorldTime

The day/night disk – clearly divided into two black and white sections – is instantly recognisable and indicates whether it is day or night in the local city, and therefore in the second time zone of choice.

One slight, yet eye-catching detail on the disk is the small sun indicating the daytime hours – black numerals on a white background – and the little crescent moon for the night hours – white numerals on a black background.

Rebirth of an icon

Limited to 1,000 pieces, the Jaeger-LeCoultre polaris Memovox features the special alarm function made famous by the 1968 Memovox polaris watch.

This 50th anniversary timepiece has a three-crown design: one for setting the alarm (top), one for the inner rotating bezel (middle) and one for setting the time (bottom). The vintage cues on the dial are an homage to the 1968 original – vanilla Super-Luminova ™ © STARSONLINE - Produção de Conteúdos, Lda. *, trapezoidal indices mixed with four Arabic numbers – and the triangle in the dial center serving as the alarm indicator.

Controlled by the alarm crown, the central disc turns to line up the triangle with the desired alarm time. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 956 features the striking mechanism with a gong, along with the central seconds and instant-jump date-change system.

A direct descendant of the first automatic alarm watch movement created by JaegerLeCoultre in the 1950s, the calibre is constantly updated and modernised, still representing the ultimate in accuracy, robustness and reliability, a rare example of a movement that has been in production for more than 60 years after its creation.

The new Jaeger-LeCoultre polaris Memovox comes on a brand-new rubber strap with a new folding buckle and is water resistant to 200 metres. The timepieces are available at the Jaeger-LeCoultre Boutique in Pavilion KL. Or to find out more log on to www.jaegerlecoultre.com.
