Barack Obama has shared a sweet throwback picture of him and his wife as he wished Michelle Obama a happy 55th birthday.

The former US president posted the photo on Instagram and Twitter of the couple with his arm around her as they both smile at the camera, looking relaxed.

He wrote: "I knew it way back then and I'm absolutely convinced of it today - you're one of a kind @MichelleObama. Happy Birthday!"

The photo appears to have been taken in the Kenyan city of Mombasa in 1991, the same year they got engaged.

Mrs Obama replied to his post by thanking everybody for their "birthday love" and saying how proud she is of her "South Side roots, my soul-affirming partner and daughters, and every unimaginable twist and turn over these 55 years".

She added: "Can't wait to see what becomes of the next one!"

Mr Obama also posted a picture for his wife's birthday on 17 January last year and in 2015.

Last year he shared a more recent picture of him looking lovingly at his wife who is looking at the camera with her arm resting on his leg.

In 2015 he posted a picture of Mrs Obama cuddling a schoolgirl.
