Estes Park planning commission is considering proposals from a couple of developers to develop what is called Stanley Lot 4. The lot is just southeast of the hotel and sits next door to the hotel. One developer, Ed Gruff wants to build 42 condos in front of the Stanley Hotel with a mix of retail, office and residential space using about 57,000 sq feet on the 7 acre lot. A large group of residents has formed to protest the idea. The city also wants to sell land that is prime elk-grazing property, another issue causing outrage in the city. Helen H. The Stanley Hotel (Estes Park, Colorado, US)

Stephen King's Overlook Hotel in "The Shining" was inspired by his stay at this Colorado hotel. More than a 100 years old, it has over 400 rooms in addition to massive ballrooms, dining spaces and an underground cave system. Guests have often reported sightings of the hotel’s founder, Freelan Oscar Stanley, his wife Flora and a housekeeper named Elizabeth Wilson.
