Supermarkets and minimarts are deviously arranged to maximise your impulse spending. You may go in expecting to spend $200 but come out $300 poorer.

At the very least, you can use the right credit card to maximise your rebates. This could range from direct cashback to points that you can accumulate to exchange for more rewards.

Maybank FC Barcelona Visa Signature Card

This card isn’t just great for FC Barcelona fans. It’s the most straightforward card on the list, giving you flat out 1.6% cashback on everything.

There are no cashback caps or minimum spend requirements too, so that’s another win in our books.

If you loathe having to pick through your cards to optimise them - or you only want one card - this is your top choice.

HSBC Visa Platinum Card

This is the only card that gives you a high cashback rate of 5% for both groceries and petrol.

While the $800-a-month minimum may seem high, remember that your recurring bills can be paid through the same card. This can make it easy to qualify for the full rebate.

And even if you don’t make the $800 minimum spend, a $400 minimum spend will still net you a 3% rebate.

Overall, the people who benefit from this card are the ones who both drive and buy groceries.

BOC Sheng Siong Card

While there’s a cashback cap of $90 (this includes both the 7% for grocery shopping, and the 5% for out-of-store purchases), this is a good card for Sheng Siong regulars.

It’s highly specific and with such a high cashback rate, you’re likely to optimise it with just two grocery runs per month (or a big one).

UOB Delight Credit Card

UOB Delight Credit Card

This grocery card is capped at $50 cashback. However, it’s easy to optimise as you’ll hit that number in no time with a whopping 8% rebate.

The key is to make sure you stack most of your expenses on the same card, since there’s a minimum spend of $800 to get the best benefits. Do combine some other non-groceries expenses on this card to get the best of it.

If your monthly expenses are much lower than this, however, pick another card with a lower minimum spend. This card is better suited to those who spend above-average amounts on groceries.

UOB ONE Card

$150 cash credit for being among the first 500 new-to-bank customers to apply online, and spend $1,200 within the first 30 days of approval (valid till 30 Sep 2018)Annual fee waived for first year

The UOB ONE card has a high minimum spend requirement - at least $1,000 a month. However, the 3.33% cashback (with a $50 cap) applies to almost everything, even overseas spending.

If you insist on paying everything through the same card, but you still want a higher cashback rate than the Maybank FC Barcelona card, then this could be right for you.

It may be best to combine all your spending on this single card, to make the $1,000 requirement.

Get this card if you prefer its versatility at accumulating cashback for almost all kinds of spending
