JOHOR BAHRU (June 13): Johor Opposition leader Datuk Hasni Mohammad said the Pakatan Harapan Federal government made the right decision to postpone and not cancel the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail (HSR) project.

In a statement here today, he said it was the right decision as the project held great potential for the local rail industry.

He said high-speed rail was a new industry for Malaysia and as such would open up many opportunities.

Yesterday, in a briefing to  Malaysian journalists on the conclusion of his three-day working visit to Japan, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the project, introduced by the previous Barisan Nasional government, would not be be cancelled but postponed instead.

He said this was due to the Government’s current financial position but felt there was need for the HSR, which would reduce rail travelling time from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore from three hours to 90 minutues, down the road.

Johor, which was also ruled by the Barisan Nasional, fell to Pakatan Harapan in the 14th general election on May 9.
