The 38-year-old man, surnamed Chan, fell down the waterfall at Waterfall Bay at 6pm on Saturday, HK01reports.

Chan, who was heading towards his home at the nearby Wah Fu Estate after an afternoon run at Cyberport, took a shortcut by passing through the top of Waterfall Bay but lost his footing on the path, which had become slippery after heavy rain.

He was able to hold onto a branch for around 20 seconds and call for help, according to Apple Daily. A passerby surnamed Wong, who was in a nearby pavilion with a friend, heard Chan’s call for help and called the police, Oriental Dailyreports.

When paramedics arrived, they found Chan in the water and certified him dead on the scene.

Chan lived in a flat in Wah Hing House, Wah Fu Estate with his wife and their three-year-old son, who requires regular medical treatment for a chronic illness. The 38-year-old, who was his family’s sole breadwinner, worked at the Aberdeen Wholesale Fish Market at night and as a porter during the day to support his family.

A spokesperson from the Social Welfare Department told reporters that they would contact Chan’s family to provide adequate support.

The last casualty reported at Waterfall Bay took place in August 2008, when a 20-year-old British-Chinese woman fell to her deat while walking her dog.
