KUALA TERENGGANU: A canteen operator and her two workers were killed in an early morning accident as they were heading to their workplace at a prawn farm in Kampung Nyatoh, Setiu.

Marina Deraman, 48, and her two female workers, Azizah Jamaludin, also 48, and 36-year-old Indonesian national Dewiyanti Demmagassing, sustained serious injuries and died on the spot in the 6.40am accident.

Another worker, Nor Ashimah Mohd Yasim, 36, sustained serious head injuries and was sent to Hospital Setiu for treatment.

It is learned that a four-wheel-drive vehicle coming from the opposite direction had failed to overtake the vehicle in front and crashed into the car the women were travelling in.

The impact caused their car to crash into an electricity pole. One of the victims was also flung out of the vehicle while the rest were pinned in the wreckage.

Setiu OCPD Supt Zulkifli Mat confirmed the incident, saying that the dead were taken to Hospital Setiu for post-mortem while Nor Ashimah has been transferred to Kuala Terengganu's Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah for further treatment.

The case is being investigated for reckless driving causing death under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
