In a fit of anger, a 35-year-old man saw green and went Hulk Smash with a bunch of heavy objects, hurling two dumbbells, a chair, two bamboo poles, shoes, and two laundry racks from the 22nd floor of an HDB block. The items shattered the windscreen of a van, and for his rash act, Jai Vicknesh Kandasamy was sentenced to one month in jail yesterday, reported The Straits Times.

Besides all that, the 35-year-old part-time delivery assistant was also slapped with an S$800 (US$588) fine — or four days’ jail in default — for using abusive language on a police officer.

The incident, which occurred at the void deck of an HDB block in Jalan Kayu on Apr 11, started when Vicknesh and two friends — Jeya Jayaram, 32, and Subramaniam Ellan, 29 — turned up at the flat of Jayaram’s ex-boyfriend, 32-year-old Karthikeyan Murty.

Jayaram wanted to talk to Karthikeyan outside the flat, but when he emerged, she punched him and yelled at him, ordering him to confess what he had told others about her. That was when Vicknesh got violent and threw the objects 22 stories to the ground, breaking the windscreen of a parked Toyota Hi-Roof van, which resulted in repair costs amounting to S$700 (US$514).

Vicknesh also rebuked a sergeant from the Sengkang Neighbourhood Police Centre, using a Tamil vulgar word on him four times when he came to interview the trio, noted ST.

After convicting Vicknesh last month, District Judge John Ng reprimanded him for the dumbbells he tossed from such a high level that clearly could have killed someone on the ground floor.

“Eighty per cent of our population live in HDB flats. You are not throwing some tissue paper, toilet roll, but dumb-bells. It will be too late if you hit somebody. In this case, it hit a car and affected somebody’s livelihood,” he said.

Vicknesh’s lawyer said that the man had been intoxicated and irrational when committed the rash act. For his actions, he could have been jailed a maximum of six months and/or fined up to S$2,500 (US$1,838). For using abusive words, he could have been jailed a maximum of 12 months and/or fined up to S$5,000 (US$3,676).
