The closest thing to a wildfire in Singapore broke out at East Coast Park last night, with dozens of firefighters deployed to bring a blaze nearly the size of two football fields under control.

The fire broke out near Marina East Drive, located at the extreme end of the park where there are significantly more trees, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said on its Facebook page. It is also where a green overhead bridge popular among cyclists is located.

SCDF said it was alerted to the “vegetation fire” at about 9pm, which required about 50 firefighters to head to the site in 12 emergency vehicles. Seven water jets were used to put out the flame, they said.

Luckily, there were no reported injuries from the fire, which was brought under control by 10:30pm.

Photos of the raging flame with plumes of smoke rising from the coastal park have been shared on social media.

According to Twitter user Sean Goh, the burning smell could be traced all the way to the housing estate in Bedok North, which is about 10km away.
