On Monday evening, Jacelyn Wong was at home preparing steamed eggs — her 4-year-old daughter’s favorite dish — when she was suddenly overcome with a sense of unease.

Soon after, she received a call from Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. Her daughter, Eleanor Tan Si Xuan, had gotten into a serious traffic accident and was conveyed unconscious to the hospital, where the toddler later died from her injuries, reported TODAY. The 53-year-old male driver who hit the car was arrested at the scene for causing death by a rash act.

The police were alerted to an accident along Bukit Batok Central around 6:40pm on Monday, involving a car and two female pedestrians: the 4-year-old and the family’s domestic helper, who picked up the girl from a childcare centre earlier on. A witness who spoke to Shin Min Daily News noted that he heard a “loud bang” before he saw the woman and the little girl lying in pool of blood on the road, five metres away from the car.

Eleanor died at the hospital, while the maid suffered severe injuries. It was only when the girl’s parents reached the hospital that they found out their daughter had succumbed to her injuries.

“I was thinking then, all these are not real. I must be dreaming,” Wong said to the media.

Wong broke the tragic news to her friends and family in a Facebook post.
