One of four men charged over a massive Telegram nudes channel will serve no jail time after he pleaded guilty to possessing close to 500 lewd films.

Some were disappointed that Justin Lee Han Shi, who possessed and trafficked more than 1,000 videos and photos of women through a channel called SG Nasi Lemak, was given one year of probation and 40 hours of community service by the court today.

“Probation is NOT sufficient punishment! The modesty and privacy of individuals are not some cheapskate commodities where you can step on and cr*p at!” Facebooker Jessica Chan said. If the law is unwilling to do the punishing, let the society do it. Show the faces of these perpetrators!”

Lee, 20, must also remain indoors overnight for the term of his sentence, which comes a month after he pleaded guilty to violating the Films Act.

Three others are awaiting sentencing. They are channel admins Leonard Teo Min Xuan, 27, Liong Tianwei, 38, and an 18-year-old man unidentified because he was a minor at the time.

The SG Nasi Lemak Telegram channel had more than 40,000 members when it was exposed last October amid police complaints filed by victims. Lee was arrested that same month after officers raided his home and seized electronic devices containing the images.

The invite-only channel circulated photos of young women including nudes and sexual situations without permission, was said to collect S$30 membership fees. Police said that they had received complaints about it as early as March. The channel has since been removed from Telegram.

It comes after a series of court decisions perceived as lenient toward men who have victimized women.

In July, the women’s wing of the ruling People’s Action Party expressed concern about the controversial sentencing of a National University of Singapore student convicted of choking his ex-girlfriend.

In June, a woman’s rights group called for a special court to handle cases involving sexual violence after a doctor who sexually assaulted a student was cleared of rape. Last year, another National University of Singapore undergrad got a slap on the wrist for a series of sexual assaults from a judge who cited his “potential to excel in life.”

“No wonder no respect for women, and no fear for consequences even [after] convicted,” user Rachael Percy said of Lee’s sentence. “Only probation.”
