A UK bride-to-be has been imprisoned for violently attacking her maid of honour after learning her fiancé had slept with her former friend.

Helen Hoaken, 37, admitted to causing grievous bodily harm after the March altercation left Carol Clarkson, 32, with a fractured skull and a brain bleed.

Hoaken grabbed Clarkson's hair and flung her to the ground, smashing her head into the pavement.

Clarkson needed an emergency operation and spent five days in hospital following the attack. Without the operation, it is likely Clarkson would have died from her injuries, BBC reports.

The publication states Hoaken has been jailed for 10 months.

Exeter Crown Court heard the perpetrator had discovered shortly before her wedding date that her fiancé had slept with her maid of honour. She subsequently attacked Clarkson after seeing her walking home on March 29.

Exeter Crown Court judge Timothy Rose acknowledged how "hurt and angry" Hoaken would have been, saying he understood her position.

However, Rose condemned Hoaken for her "quite shocking" assault on Clarkson, saying her former friend could have easily suffered from more serious consequences.

Hoaken's wedding has reportedly been postponed indefinitely.
