A desperate search is underway for a young New Zealand woman who vanished from her family home on a remote Canadian Island.

Shilanne Stedmances, 23, told her family she loved them moments before she fled her home on Bowen Island, a 20-minute ferry ride from Vancouver, at 8.30pm on Monday.

She left without her phone or wallet.

Friends and family are extremely concerned as she has been battling mental health problems, her friend Rachel Sinclair told Daily Mail Australia.

'It is extremely heartbreaking for us all whom are close with her and have watched her struggle.'

Ms Sinclair, who has been friends with Ms Stedmances for six years, said she was in good spirits when the pair last spoke.

She told her how much she loved her and how important their friendship was.

Police have been searching the small island, which has a population of 3,680, since Ms Stedmances was reported missing, however, they have found no trace of her.

Ms Stedmances has dual citizenship, but lives in Canada with her mother.

'She has had quite the rough go at life, but she is the most kind loving brilliant vibrant soul... she is a positive uplifting lady who always offers a helping hand to anyone and everyone.'

Ms Stedmances loves the outdoors and recently began working for a tree felling company.

She has dark brown hair and was last seen wearing wearing a black long sleeved t-shirt and black pants.

Anyone who may have seen or heard from her has been urged to contact authorities immediately.
