Model Zara Abid feared dead after plane carrying 107 people crashes in Pakistan

Model Zara Abid is feared to be among those who were on board the doomed Pakistan International Airlines plane that crashed into a housing estate.

Tributes are being paid on social media to the "wonderful and hardworking" star, although her death has not been confirmed.

More than 100 passengers were on the flight travelling from Lahore to Karachi Airport when it crashed into a residential area and exploded into flames.

The city's mayor Waseem Akhtar said: "At the moment we have the view that there will be no survivors from the plane itself but it is not confirmed."

However at least one person is understood to have survived, a government official said.

Tributes are now being paid to Zara online.

Fashion designer Khadijah Shah tweeted: "The fashion Industry lost Zara Abid in the plane crash today.

"She was a wonderful girl, hardworking and professional. I was in awe of the energy and the dynamism in her photographs- May her soul RIP – so many ppl lost their loved ones today, may Allah have mercy on us all."

Actress Aiman Khan posted: "Zara you were a sweetheart!!! We will miss you may Allah give you higher place in jannah."

And Shamoon Abbasi said: "Zara Abid the famous model and actress. One of the biggest loss this year [sic]. Her family has confirmed that she has not survived the PIA crash."

Another message posted on Twitter read: "Fashion Model #ZaraAbid was also traveling from Lahore to Karachi in the unfortunate plane PIA flight 8303 which crashed near Airport before landing.

"Her brother reached at the spot of incident but couldn't find her and he is looking for her in the hospital."

Actor and activist Frieha Altaf also took and wrote: "PIA plane crash. Our fashion model Zara Abid on the list of passengers. I'm devastated. #allahkhair #piaplanecrash.

According to Frieha, Zara was doing a show for a clothing brand Sana Safinaz, but left for Karachi following the death of her uncle.

She wrote: "I'm just sick to my stomach. This is so close to home. Huge tragedy for the fashion industry."

Meanwhile, Actress Ayeza Khan has quashed rumours she was on board the flight.

She took to her official Instagram handle and thrashed rumours calling it 'fake news'.

This afternoon it also emerged at least one passenger survived the crash.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah inquired after the health of banker Zafar Mahmood, who miraculously survived, a provincial government spokesman Abdur Rashid Channa said in a statement.

When the chief minister said "Murad is here", the survivor replied "Thank you so much. God has been merciful", the statement said.

Pakistan's civil aviation authority said there had been 91 passengers and eight crew on board the Airbus A320.
