A part of Willis Street has been closed after a threat was made on a bus.

Police were called to the incident at 5.20pm and are working to establish the validity of the threat.

Officers are speaking to the person believed to have made the threat and are not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.

The street has been closed between Mercer Street and Lambton Quay, and people are asked to avoid the area.

A woman who was on the bus when the threat occurred says the man was one of the homeless men local to the area.

"He was upset and by the sounds of things very drunk," she posted on Facebook.

"Police and our driver on the Rongotai number 3 handled it very quickly and were calm with everyone in the surrounding areas and the man himself," she told Newshub.

More to come.
