Alexis Sanchez’s star has shone in Europe since his move from South America, during his teens.

The Manchester United forward, now 29, has grown from a skinny, lightweight winger into one of the Premier League’s most fearsome attackers during the past decade.

And the ex-Barcelona and Udinese man can also claim to be a record breaker in his own right, as the only player to score a hat-trick in Serie A, La Liga and the Premier League.

Now the best paid player in England, the Chilean has his eye on trophies at United, following his switch from Arsenal in January.

What is Manchester United's best XI? Red Devils experts have their say on Jose Mourinho's options

United’s club magazine takes a look at the club’s latest star name in a 16-page feature on the player this month.

And one particular tale, from the player’s time at Udinese, particularly stands out: when Sanchez ran home from training after locking his keys in his car.

“Once, after training, Alexis drove into Udine to do some shopping,” Italian journalist Pietro Oleotto told United's official website.

“But he accidentally locked his keys and mobile phone. I’m not sure what most people would have done, but he just ran home.

“He jogged the 8km from the heart of the city to his house in the hills. Bemused locals saw him in his club tracksuit running and called us at the paper.

“It was typical of Alexis to turn the situation into an improvised cross-country run.”

Alexis Sanchez reveals moment Lionel Messi cried after Champions League heartache against Chelsea

Sanchez spent three years as part of the first team set up in Udine, before leaving to join Barcelona in 2011.

Sanchez had originally signed for Udinese in 2006, being sent on loan to Chilean side Colo-Colo and then Argentine giants River Plate.

He scored just three times in 43 games during his first campaign in Europe, but Oleotto has revealed how he soon made himself integral to the Zebrete, after packing on the muscle.

“In his first season, Alexis was skinny and stayed on the right wing a lot,” he added. "The physicality in the penalty area was too much for him.

“But the team needed him more central, closer to the goal, to make the most of his dribbling.

“So he began improving his body and they build him an ad-hoc gym. He worked out for two hours a day after training.

“I remember seeing him halfway through pre-season training camp and being shocked by how much muscle he had put on.”
