Sebastian Vettel has paid an emotional tribute to his "hero" Michael Schumacher.

The F1 legend endured life changing injuries on the French Alps where he was holidaying with his family and friends in December 2013.

Schumacher is now understood to receive round-the-clock care with updates on his condition rare over recent years.

Vettel is the second-most successful German in racing history behind Schumacher and has revealed the impact he has had on his career.

“He was my hero. I used to have posters on the wall of him. I met Michael for the first time when I was seven. Then, later, I got to know him as a person and he was always there for me, with a word of advice or help." he told F1 Racing magazine.

Why Michael Schumacher's condition has been kept secret for five years

"For me, he is the best driver we have ever had in terms of talent, skills, passion and willpower.

“He will be remembered as the best driver in history.

"I think he was uncontested both in terms of talent and his attitude to sport, the devotion, the work, the will, always to five more than anyone else."
