Hull City striker Jarrod Bowen has revealed he turned down the chance to replace tragic Emiliano Sala at Cardiff City.

Sala never played a game for the Bluebirds after being killed in a plane crash just days after becoming their club record signing.

With the January transfer window drawing to a close, City turned their attentions to Bowen and tabled a £12m bid to try and land a frontman.

But Bowen admits he felt "very uncomfortable" about the prospect of replacing Sala, who was still missing, presumed dead at the time he rejected a dream Premier League swit.

"The whole situation was very uncomfortable," Bowen told the Daily Mail.

"Of course, it was nothing to do with how I view Cardiff as a club, and any player will tell you it's their dream to play in the Premier League.

"But the whole story around Sala was just so tragic. I know it caused a lot of shock and upset in our dressing-room at Hull, and I am sure it was the same around the country.

"To join Cardiff knowing that he was meant to play for them would have been incredibly difficult and not something that filled me with any enthusiasm.

"Of course, any transfer would have needed Hull's approval in any case, but from my personal point of view it was never a starter, not under those circumstances. It just felt wrong.

"Now we know for certain that Emiliano died. It still feels unbelievable that his life could be cut short like that, it seems so cruel."

Sala joined Cardiff City from Nantes in January before the plane carrying him from France to the Welsh capital for his first training session crashed into the English channel on January 21.

The 23-year-old and pilot David Ibbotson were on board the light aircraft, which was discovered on the sea bed on February 3 by a private search before Sala's body was recovered four days later.
