Premier League team of the week as Liverpool pair join title-chasing Tottenham trio

It was another action-packed weekend of Premier League action, as Tottenham and Liverpool kept their title pursuits on track.

Spurs, under the stewardship of Jose Mourinho, produced an impressive defensive performance to heap misery on Manchester City with a 2-0 victory.

And Liverpool kept the pressure on the top-flight's surprise leaders with a routine 3-0 win over Leicester, despite Jurgen Klopp's current injury crisis.

Elsewhere, Manchester United scraped to a fortunate win over West Brom and Arsenal were held to a goalless draw and Leeds.

So, who were the top performers in the latest round? In a 4-3-3 formation, it's the Mirror Football team of the week...

GK: Sam Johnstone (West Brom)

The former United goalkeeper failed to make the grade at Old Trafford and, after seven loan spells away from the club, joined West Brom two years ago.

He is becoming an integral part of the West Brom squad and proved his worth with a string of smart saves against his former employers, despite ultimately conceding in the 1-0 loss.

The pick of the bunch was a stunning reaction stop to prevent Martial from opening the scoring, a save David de Gea would have been proud of.

RB: James Milner ( Liverpool )

Known as Mr Versatile, Milner lived up to expectations again in the Leicester victory with a fine performance in an unfamiliar right-back spot.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold out injured, the Reds' vice-captain was tasked with keeping Leicester's in-form forwards quiet.

And he certainly did that, while also providing an attacking threat throughout this match. Indeed, the experienced midfielder provided the cross for Liverpool's opener.

It's easy to forget that at 34 years old, Milner has entered the twilight years of his career, but he's showing no signs of slowing down.

CB: Eric Dier ( Tottenham )

Dier has found himself switching between defence and midfield during his career.

But under Jose Mourinho, the England international has cemented himself as Spurs' first-choice centre-back - and he's certainly delivering the goods.

He was solid in the stunning 2-0 win over City, keeping Gabriel Jesus quiet, and the clean sheet capped off a wonderful comfortable evening for Dier and Co.

CB: Antonio Rudiger ( Chelsea )

The Germany international looked to have fallen out of favour under Frank Lampard and was linked with a summer exit.

But he stayed put and made his first Premier League appearance of the season in Chelsea's clash with Newcastle.

And it was a solid return for Rudiger, who marshalled his defence and helped them to a solid clean sheet in the 2-0 win at St James' Park.

LB: Lucas Digne ( Everton )

Everton pulled off somewhat off a coup when they prised Digne away from Barcelona in 2018.

The Frenchman has been a consistent performer in the top-flight ever since arriving - and he produced yet another marvellous performance over the weekend.

Digne's two assists helped the Toffees to a hard-fought 3-2 win at Fulham, a much-needed three points that strengthened their quest for a top-four spot.

CM: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (Tottenham)

Of all Tottenham's summer signings, Hojbjerg is arguably the one who is impressing most.

The former Southampton midfielder has been an instant hit under Mourinho, with his tough-tackling approach making Spurs a tricky team to break down.

And once again, the Denmark star covered every blade of grass against Man City to keep their title pursuit on track.

CM: N'Golo Kante (Chelsea)

Kante's consistent performances often go under the radar, but there was no denying how important he was in the 2-0 win at Newcastle.

The Frenchman, who was Chelsea's captain for the game, turned in a typically energetic display in midfield as the Blues secured a vital triumph

Kante bounced back from his injury issues to star in midfield, as an own goal from Federico Fernandez and Tammy Abraham's second-half strike sealed the three points.

CM: Declan Rice ( West Ham )

It seems only a matter of time before Rice moves on from West Ham, with the midfielder continuing to impress in midfield.

The Hammers' academy graduate was a constant menace in the 1-0 win at Sheffield United, hassling the Blades' attackers to ensure the visitors left with all three points.

These are the type of performances Rice needs to be producing if he's to secure his seat on the plane to the Euros with England next summer.

ST: Diogo Jota (Liverpool)

What a signing Jota is proving to be.

The Portugal international, 23, has been an instant hit since arriving from Wolves in the summer and he enhanced his growing reputation with a wonderful header to double Liverpool's lead in their win over Leicester.

And in scoring again, he became the first player in Liverpool's history to score in each of his first four home top-flight league appearances for the club.

It was a superbly-taken goal too, with the Reds' forward getting on the end of Robertson's cross to glance a header beyond Kasper Schmeichel.

ST: Harry Kane (Tottenham)

Kane is becoming integral to Spurs' title bid - whether or not he scores.

The England captain has been in brilliant form this season and ran Man City's defence ragged over the weekend, proving to be a nuisance all over the pitch.

His movement in the opening exchanges saw Son Heung-min opening the scoring after a delightful pass from Tanguy Ndombele, and he continued to shine.

ST: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton)

After a run of three defeats, Everton needed their star man Calvert-Lewin to deliver against Fulham.

And he certainly did, with the England man netting an impressive brace to take his tally to 13 goals in 11 games so far this campaign.

Those latest heroics, which helped the Toffees to a vital win, means Calvert-Lewin is currently the Premier League's top goalscorer on 10 goals.
