Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been criticised for his lack of goals - but Rio Ferdinand has issued a defence of the under-fire star and called out two team-mates for not pulling their weight.

Aubameyang has not scored in open play since the opening day of the Premier League season.

After defeat against Wolves on Sunday, manager Mikel Arteta admitted his “biggest concern is how to help him more to score goals because we need his goals.

”He needs to be scoring goals if we want to be successful,” he added.

But Ferdinand believes the issue is not that simple.

Instead, he named Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe as two examples of big-money signings failing to do their fair share and contribute to the goal tally.

Lacazette has found the net three times in the Premier League this season with Pepe, currently serving a ban after his red card against Leeds, scoring only once this term in the top flight.

Ferdinand singled out the pair as he criticised their lack of consistency and stated that Arsenal ’s reliance on Aubameyang is apparent.

"What’s going on with you lot [Arsenal] over there?!" Ferdinand told the FIVE YouTube channel.

"You’re lacking consistency. You’re searching for goals. There are not goals in the team at the moment.

"When Aubameyang doesn’t bang nobody else seems to be stepping up, that’s the problem.

"I love the way Arteta is bringing the young players in and the young players have been performing but sometimes you need the experienced players to drag you through a situation like this.

"Laca man! We need Laca to come up with some goals man! Pepe! When you get your chance come in and bang. We haven’t seen that cutting edge from this Arsenal team.

"Arteta came in and steadied the ship and told them ‘This is what I’m doing, this is my team this is what I do at Arsenal’ and the players responded to it.

"Aubameyang, in particular, was scoring goals but this just shows you how reliant this team is on Aubameyang. If he doesn’t score then Arsenal aren’t the same team man."
