1. Gallipoli, Turkey

Close to the ancient city of Troy and on the northwestern side of the Dardanelles Strait, this slender peninsula has seen more than its fair share of invasions. The most recent was the Allied naval attack on the Dardanelles in March 1915 and the landings of Allied troops on the peninsula on 25 April 1915. This year Australians and New Zealanders are expected to arrive in the thousands to commemorate the involvement of Anzac (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) troops in the landing.
