'You Are Us': Prime Minister Addresses Muslim Community at Refugee Center in Christchurch

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern spoke to Muslim community members and families of the victims of the Christchurch Mosque shootings at a refugee center in Christchurch, New Zealand, on March 16. “As-Salaam-Alaikum. Peace be upon you and peace be upon all of us. I am here today to bring with me the grief of all of New Zealand,” Prime Minister Ardern said to people gathered at the Canterbury Refugee Centre. “You will have heard me say say in the media that yes this is an event that has happened in Christchurch, that this has happened to our Muslim community. But you are us. And so we feel deeply in our hearts what has happened to you. We feel grief, we feel injustice, we feel anger, and we share that with you.” Ardern went on to address concerns, such as the recovery of the bodies of the deceased for burial practices and extra police deployed to keep watch.
