Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Sketch Revealed Ahead of Shanghai

Now that the Mercedes-Benz ML-Class has officially been unveiled as the GLE-Class, the automaker has shifted its focus on its smaller stable-mate. With the new naming structure, the GLK will become the GLC, and we’ve gotten our first look at the coupe variant in a design sketch ahead of its Shanghai debut.

Research

From the sketch, we can see that the GLC Coupe will feature styling cues similar to those found on the GLE Coupe, such as the short, round nose, bulging wheel wells, and a sharply raked roofline. This should come as no surprise since we’ve already spied the GLC two times before, though we still have yet to see the GLC Coupe in the sheetmetal. Both GLC prototypes featured the same face as the GLA and GLE, with the same thick two-slatted grille and headlight design. We also noted that the prototypes looked both longer and wider than the current GLK.

We also got a peek inside one of the prototypes, which featured a large free-standing screen that will be controlled by the updated COMAND infotainment controller found on the center console. We expect new features to include a touch pad that accepts finger-written characters, as well as smartphone-like commands. As for the powertrain lineup, we expect the C-Class’s engine range to be offered on the GLC Coupe, though those details are still unknown at this point. In the U.S., the C-Class is currently offered with a direct-injected 2.0-liter turbo-four rated at 235 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque; a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 rated at 329 hp; and a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that’s rated between 469-503 hp in the C63 and C63 S models. The GLC lineup will likely follow in the GLE’s footsteps, with the coupe being revealed first, followed by all the other models which could also include a plug-in hybrid. The GLE Coupe will make its debut at the Shanghai motor show as a “near-production-standard study” later this month.
