TOTD: What Car Should get the Ford Shelby GT350's Flat-Plane V-8 Next?

Ford's flat-plane-crank 5.2-liter V-8 in the new Shelby GT350 Mustang may not be a complete surprise, considering the engine has been rumored for months now, but it is surprising that the Blue Oval greenlit development on such an extreme performance engine for a niche model in the first place. Now that it has though, how can it recoup those development costs? One way is to spread them around to other models.

As we learned earlier today, the new 5.2-liter V-8 makes "more than 500 hp" and over 400 lb-ft of torque. The engine's flat-plane crankshaft allows it to build revs quickly, and also facilitates high revs. The most obvious choice for such an engine, besides the Shelby GT350, is the long-awaited Ford GT replacement. We've heard that the street version would get the 5.2-liter, while the race car would get an EcoBoost V-6.

Though we haven't heard much about a Lincoln halo coupe lately, if that car is still a go then a high-performance variant could benefit from the new flat-plane V-8. And while a high-strung V-8 wouldn't make as much sense in an off-road-focused vehicle like the SVT Raptor, there's no doubt it would sound pretty rad.
