The Toyota Camry has over the years become the butt of jokes for some auto enthusiasts who aren’t shy about their disdain for basic, mainstream vehicles. Those people were silenced at this year’s SEMA show, when Toyota unveiled its Toyota Sleeper Camry, an 850-hp dragster disguised as an unassuming   2015 Camry XSE.

Sometimes, big things come in humble packages.

It has a full tube-frame chassis; the Tundra pickup's 5.7-liter V-8 engine, transmission, live rear axle, and electronics; a TRD supercharger; and a wet nitrous system. The interior is distilled and stripped-down to the bare minimum, replaced by a racing seat with a full harness.

“This Camry is the ultimate sleeper—it definitely has the element of surprise on its side and more than enough muscle to drop the hammer on any unsuspecting car that pulls up,” said Toyota Motorsport Technical Center director Chuck Wade in a statement.

Toyota estimates that the Sleeper Camry can pull of a 9.8-second quarter-mile. And you thought the Chevrolet SS was a sleeper.

While the Toyota Sleeper Camry won’t be offered for sale, it will be headed on tour after SEMA to make appearances at some NHRA race events.
