The 2019 Jeep Cherokee will get a bit of a nip/tuck if these spy photos are to be believed. Jeep’s controversial crossover debuted in 2014 as a replacement for the boxy Liberty (and the even boxier Cherokee XJ before it), but not everyone was enamored with its kinked grille slats, bumper-mounted headlamps, and slim parking lights mounted high on the front fascia. On models with foglights, there were six—count ’em, six—lighting elements on the front end, cluttering the styling.

Still, it’s one of Jeep’s bestselling models (with plenty of legitimate off-road chops), and that status will likely persist given the 2019 model that was spied testing recently. Gone are the split parking and headlights, with both integrated into a slick, falcon wing–inspired lighting element next to a reshaped grille. Also restyled is the lower front fascia, giving the front end a much more conventional (if less distinctive) appearance.

The styling changes continue around back, which features a reshaped rear bumper, a new hatch that now incorporates the license plate opening, and new taillights. The rear lighting looks like it might have been inspired by Jeep’s signature slatted front grille, a subtle nod to the company’s heritage. Somewhat confusingly, the machine shown here features a tiny, pea-shooter exhaust pipe, which we don’t believe is available on the current Cherokee. That could either be a deliberate design decision, cleaning up the rear end with a smooth underbody, or it could just be a test-mule anomaly. We doubt it portends a new powertrain.

Inside, the Jeep will stay very close to the current model, but as you see, it will incorporate the newest iteration of Chrysler’s Uconnect infotainment. We’ve sampled it in the Cherokee’s corporate cousins and it works just fine, thanks.

Expect to see the refreshed, smoother Cherokee at Jeep dealers by July or August of next year.
