Car and Driver Logo By Joseph Capparella of Car and Driver | Slide 1 of 11: A low price is just about the most enticing feature a new car can have. Combine an attractive MSRP with the crossovers and SUVs taking today’s auto market by storm, and you land on an entirely irresistible concoction. Nearly every major automaker is wise to the game, and they’re offering more and more cheap crossovers to feed the SUV-hungry masses. Fair warning, though: Be prepared to get what you pay for. Not only is this list made up of some of the smallest and least practical crossovers, many of them are sparsely equipped, lacking niceties most of us have come to expect from new cars. If you want all-wheel drive, that will cost extra. Oh, and bring a left foot; a good number of these affordable utes come with manual transmissions. With “Car” still a solid third of our publication’s name, we’d like to mention that there is more car to be had for similar money if you can give up on SUVs. The 10Best-winning Honda Civic Sport hatchback ($22,540) and Volkswagen Golf ($21,760) come to mind. If you must drive something tall for as little money as possible, click onward for the absolute cheapest 2018 SUVs, all of which slide in below $23,000:This article is updated whenever a new model or models merit inclusion. It was originally published in April 2018.
