The Ford F-Series has been the best-selling truck in the U.S. market now for 40 consecutive years. Although the F-150 makes up the bulk of sales volume for the F-Series, the Super Duty is an undeniably important component of the F-Series’ overall success. The Super Duty as we know it today was launched as its own standalone model for the ’99 model year. Since its introduction, the original Super Duty has received numerous upgrades over the years, including four generations of diesel engines, three substantially revised gas engines, and three generations of automatic transmissions. It has received two major exterior restyles and two major interior overhauls. However, ’17 represents the first ground-up, bumper-to-bumper all-new Super Duty since the model’s introduction.

As with its little brother F-150, the new Super Duty employs a nearly all-aluminum body, including the bed. The only major steel component of note in the body is the firewall. The aluminum skin sits atop an all-new fully boxed high-strength steel frame and beefed up drivetrain and suspension components. While Ford brags about the up to 700 pounds of weight savings on the F-150, the weight savings is more modest on the Super Duty, and more emphasis was put into investment in beefier frame and drivetrain components for higher towing and hauling capacities. As equipped, our F-250 was rated for 17,600 pounds in conventional towing and a beefy 2,400-pound payload. Capability? Check. It’s one thing to have impressive capabilities on paper, but some trucks struggle on the road when loaded down. Not this one. The 6.7L Power Stroke diesel V-8 is not only remarkably quiet and refined, but staggeringly powerful, with 440 hp and a stupendous 925 lb-ft of torque. That mighty output helped the Super Duty shrug off anything we threw at it, making short work of grades with a full load and easily maintaining speed (and often accelerating) uphill.

Equally impressive to the Super Duty’s workhorse capabilities was the opulent comfort offered by our top-of-the-line Platinum trim. The trim included heated, cooled and massaging leather-trimmed front seats, making several staffers joke they wanted to propose to the truck. The state-of-the art cabin was appointed with just about every tech gadget in Dearborn’s arsenal, including Ford’s excellent new Sync 3 multimedia interface, and multiple driving and towing aids, including adaptive cruise control, which remains fully functional when towing.

In the past, Super Duty models were characterized by a punishing ride on rough surfaces and off-road, regardless of how plush the trim level. Although far from what we’d describe as cushy, the new Super Duty surprised with its ride comfort on and off road and tackled the variety of terrain we put it through with grace and poise, at least by HD standards. The lockable rear differential gave an added measure of confidence off-road.

Our love affair with the new Super Duty was given pause when we took a look at the bill for all that coddling, totaling a substantial $77,505. Sadly, sticker prices approaching and sometimes surpassing $80,000 are not unusual in the HD truck class anymore. According to Ford and other purveyors of high-trim trucks, buyers seem to have an insatiable appetite for these lavishly equipped haulers. Just because we might not be able to personally afford them doesn’t take away from their goodness or capability. Thankfully, if you can forego the massaging seats and some of the other bells and whistles of the high-trim models, you can get all the power and capability of the Super Duty for less than $50,000 for a crew cab, diesel 4x4 XL and get into a well-equipped Lariat for just a hair more than $60,000. That strikes us as a reasonable deal for indisputably one of the most capable trucks on the market today.
