Ford F-650 and F-750 Power Stroke Designed to Go 500k Without Major Service

Ford promises its new medium duty pickups, the F-650 and F-750, could do a round-trip drive to the moon when equipped with the second-generation 6.7L Power Stroke V-8. Now, obviously that’s a bit hyperbolic, but the company’s point is this: With a design life of half a million miles, the biggest F-Series diesel should be very durable.

In a press release coinciding with the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Ford said its medium-duty F-650 and F-750 Power Strokes should be able to hit that magic number without needing any service requiring removing the cylinder heads or dropping the oil pan (provided the owner gives his new truck proper maintenance). Ford also claims the new diesel engines are quieter than the ones they replace, making 35 percent less noise at idle when standing outside the truck. At idle, truck passengers can expect 45 percent less racket, and the truck is 25 percent quieter at 60 mph than its predecessors.

Available in three different power levels, the highest-output Power Stroke is also B10-certified. At 330 hp and 725 lb-ft of torque, it should have ample power for most medium-strength duties. As with the all-new Super Duty, Ford loves touting its in-house powertrain development, channeling either the 6.8L gas V-10 or 6.7L diesel V-8’s power through a Ford-designed transmission. The all-Ford approach makes powertrain integration, management, and maintenance easier, says the company.

On sale now, the F-650 and F-750 are built at Ford’s Ohio Assembly Plant.
