Ram Rebel TRX Approved for Production

As stated by a recent press release, the Ram Rebel TRX has been approved for production, possibly in time for the 2021 model year. The Rebel TRX will be the highest-performance version of the Ram 1500 family, almost certainly powered by a 575hp version of the 6.2L supercharged Hemi V-8 found under the hood of the Dodge Challenger Hellcat.

First shown as a concept at the 2016 State Fair of Texas, the Rebel TRX boasted an additional 6 inches of track width, custom-built coilovers with 13 inches of travel, and 37-inch tires. The net result was a vehicle that looked as aggressive as it performed, thanks in part to its blown V-8's 575 horses.

In the intervening three years since the concept's debut, the new Ram 1500 was launched, so it's almost certain that the Rebel TRX will be based on that new platform rather than the concept's previous-generation bones. That bodes well for the TRX, given the current Ram's excellent interior, composed ride, and impressive chassis stiffness. However, it's possible the concept's Hellcat-based engine will be an option, not the standard, in which case we'd suspect the 5.7L eTorque Hemi V-8 to be the default engine selection for the TRX.

If the Rebel TRX wants to really bring the fight to the Ford F-150 Raptor, then it had better up its suspension credentials relative to the concept. The Raptor is wider than its F-150 siblings by 6.4 inches, and it boasts 13.0 inches of front and 13.9 inches of rear suspension travel. As such, we'd expect Ram to beat Ford at its game, giving a 2021 or 2022 TRX at least 13.5 inches of front and 14 inches of rear suspension travel.

Another tick in the Ram's favor is its standard rear coil-sprung suspension, which may not be as rugged as the Raptor's leaf springs but should offer improved control and a smoother ride. We also wonder if the Rebel TRX might come with an electronically disconnecting front sway bar like the Ram Power Wagon and Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. That would give it an articulation leg-up on the Raptor.

The Ram Rebel TRX doesn't have an official launch date or confirmed mechanical specifics, but suffice it to say, it should be the first legitimate F-150 Raptor competitor on the market in terms of high-speed desert off-roading. We should know more within a few months, as we doubt Ram will sit for too long on this thing.
