The fullsize-truck torque wars are getting heavier with every passing model year. The newest one-upmanship comes courtesy of the 2018 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty, which will be available with a pavement-cracking 930 lb-ft of torque, courtesy of a 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel I-6 mated to an Aisin six-speed automatic transmission.

Quite conveniently, that torque rating launches Ram from the bottom to the top of the 1-ton truck heap, pole-vaulting over the 910–lb-ft Chevrolet Silverado HD and 925–lb-ft Ford F-Series Super Duty. What’s more, the 3500 Heavy Duty will also be available with an all-new, Ram Engineering–designed fifth-wheel hitch capable of handling 30,000 pounds, giving the company best-in-class fifth-wheel towing. Limited by its hitch design, the Ford F-450 Super Duty can only handle 27,500 pounds, while the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD can muster 23,000 pounds of fifth-wheel capacity.

Ram says that its increased fifth-wheel towing capacity could be enough to coax fifth-wheel owners into a 3500. Per the company, the upgraded capability “will allow customers to move away from Class 4 and 5 trucks to haul trailers that would have otherwise been limited to 24,000 pounds.” However, the gooseneck towing crown still goes to the segment-straddling Ford F-450, which is rated to 32,500 pounds compared to the Ram’s 31,210. Even the lighter-duty F-350 is rated to a maximum of 32,000 pounds, cementing Ford’s dominance of that particular towing method.

Nevertheless, gooseneck capability is only good if you own a gooseneck trailer. For fifth-wheelers, there’s a new sheriff in town, and it’s the Ram 3500.
