Hyundai has given its funky, asymmetrical three-door hatchback a bit more sportiness for the 2016 model year. The 2016 Hyundai Veloster and Veloster Turbo also feature revised styling and a new limited-production Turbo Rally Edition model based on the Turbo R-Spec model.

For 2016, all Veloster models get a new hood design sans the current model's faux hood vents, and the base model receives a revised front grille. All models feature a dark gray front grille surround. The base model also gets redesigned 17-inch alloy wheels, and the Veloster Turbo gets an exclusive 18-inch wheel with a machined finish and argent spoke bevels. Hyundai also fitted a 10mm-wider tire (now 225/40R18) to all 18-inch wheels, including the available 18-inch wheel on the base model.

Other changes to the base 2016 Hyundai Veloster include available black bolster seats with yellow inserts with certain exterior colors. All models receive a revised infotainment system with a 7.0-inch color touchscreen with navigation, HD Radio, SiriusXM with Travel Link, Apple Siri Eyes Free, and next-generation Blue Link system.

In addition to wider tires on its standard 18-inch alloy wheels and Kumho Solus tires, the 2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo also gets front seats with more aggressive bolstering and a black headliner. Ultra Black and Vitamin C exterior paint colors are available with orange-accented seat bolsters. The Veloster Turbo also gets a new exclusive electroluminescent gauge cluster with larger center-mounted TFT vehicle information screen. Veloster Turbo R-Spec models now feature red seat belts to complement the existing red bolster and the black and red seat inserts. But the biggest change to the 2016 Veloster Turbo is a new transmission option. An available seven-speed dual-clutch transmission replaces the current model's optional six-speed automatic.

Limited to just 1,200 units, 2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo Rally Edition is based on the Turbo R-Spec model. All Rally Edition models will be painted in an exclusive Matte Blue paint with carbon-fiber-look aero accents. They will also feature lightweight RAYS 18-inch alloy wheels and a retuned suspension with sportier springs, dampers, and stabilizer bars than the standard R-Spec model, according to Hyundai. Those wheels are said to reduce unsprung weight by 5 pounds per wheel. The six-speed manual -- the only transmission available for the Rally Edition -- features the same short-shifting B&M Racing sport shifter as the R-Spec. Additionally, the limited-production model features black seats with blue accents and the requisite Rally Edition embroidered floor mats and badging.

Powertrains are unchanged. The base 2016 Hyundai Veloster is powered by a naturally aspirated, direct-injected, 1.6-liter I-4 mated to a six-speed manual or available six-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission (DCT). The 1.6-liter makes 138 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque when equipped with the manual and 132 hp and 120 lb-ft with the EcoShift DCT, which is tuned for fuel economy.

2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo© Provided by MotorTrend 2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo All 2016 Hyundai Veloster Turbo models, including the R-Spec and Rally Edition, are powered by a turbocharged, direct-injected, 1.6-liter I-4 making 201 hp and 195 lb-ft. Transmission choices for the Veloster Turbo include a six-speed manual or a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (not available on the Rally Edition) with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. A B&M short-throw shifter is standard on Turbo R-Spec and Rally Edition models. Although the six-speed EcoShift DCT in the base model is tuned for fuel economy, the seven-speed DCT in the Turbo model is tuned for performance, according to the automaker.

The base Veloster is EPA-rated 27/35 mpg city/highway with the manual and 28/36 mpg with the EcoShift DCT, and the Veloster Turbo is rated 25/33 mpg with the manual and 27/33 mpg with the new DCT. The current Veloster Turbo with the six-speed automatic is rated 24/31 mpg.

Expect the 2016 Hyundai Veloster and Veloster Turbo to hit dealer lots in May.
