Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Review: The Minivan Goes Gloriously Electric

Chrysler’s Pacifica Hybrid, the industry’s first plug-in hybrid electric minivan, drives like a Tesla (sort of) and can cost less than its gas-powered twin.

2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid: What You Need to Know

The all-new 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid checks all the boxes that matter most to families. It has a hushed and upscale cabin, a long list of family-friendly features, and a smooth ride. Thanks to its plug-in hybrid powertrain, it will save you money at the pump compared to gas-only competitors. The cherry on top is the Pacifica Hybrid's handling. It's more agile than most rivals, so it can be reasonably fun to drive, but it also stays composed if you ever need to take sudden evasive maneuvers. It does have a very steep starting price for the class, but you may qualify for federal or state tax credits that reduce the cost to a level comparable to rivals’ upper-trim levels. Some other minivans may better fit your family's needs at a lower cost, even when considering tax rebates. The Pacifica Hybrid only has seating for seven, and it has less cargo space than most competitors. Also, because its hybrid battery pack is mounted under the second-row seats, you lose Chrysler’s famous Stow 'n Go seating, which you’ll find in the gas-only Pacifica. In order to access the Pacifica Hybrid’s full cargo capacity, you’ll have to remove the second-row seats. For maximum space, you have to take out the Honda Odyssey's seats, too, but the Odyssey has significantly more available cargo space. Plus, it can seat up to eight people. The Kia Sedona may not be as fuel-efficient or fun to drive as the Pacifica Hybrid, but it has a long list of features that may interest you. Plus, when you need to haul cargo, you just slide the second-row seats up and forward instead of completely removing them.
