Only 8 Bugatti Veyron Supercars Left as Successor Nears Launch

With the New Year now upon us, Bugatti is getting ready to say goodbye to the Veyron supercar, as CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer revealed to CAR magazine that only eight of the supercars remain unsold.

That means a good amount of Veyrons have been sold since last October, when the automaker reported over 430 of the 450 models in the Veyron's limited production run were sold. With the number of Veyrons dwindling, the luxury supercar maker is already prepping its factory for the next-gen car, telling CAR magazine that there won't be any downtime after the remaining Veyrons have been built. The next-gen car will likely be called the Chiron, which will boast some type of electrification. Spy photographers spotted a camouflaged prototype a couple times now. Since then, more details about the car have come to light, with reports suggesting the next-generation car will be lighter and may come with an engine that delivers an incredible 1500 hp -- 25 percent stronger than the Veyron's top 1200-hp 8.0-liter W-16 beast.

We previously reported that the Chiron's engine will be paired with the familiar seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive. But thanks to an all-new direct injection scheme and an increase in boost pressure, the engine should be able to pump out 300 horses more than the outgoing Veyron. Two of the engine's four turbochargers will be powered electrically, providing quick torque peaking at 1100 lb-ft. Although performance figures haven't been confirmed, we reported that the next-gen car could have a 228-mph top speed, and a 0-62-mph time of about 2.5 seconds.

With Bugatti's factory jumping right into building pre-series Chiron supercars, it's possible it could premiere sometime this year.
