2016 Ram 2500- 50 Shades

The term “16 Days of Glory” is often used when talking about the duration of the Olympic Games. In this case, it’s describing the time and effort required to transform a stock Ram 2500 Mega Cab into a SEMA showstopper. When owner Andrew Lowe decided it was time to build his latest truck, he wanted to challenge himself and his build partners with a crazy timeline. 90 days? 60 days? In the end, they decided they could build it in three weeks—just to see if it was possible. Somehow, they completed it after working 16 days straight.

To accomplish this feat, the first step was a call to Darryl Tracy at Deluxe Garage for a rendering. As Andrew explains to us, “It’s easy for me to see the finished product in my head, but for everyone to understand my vision, a solid rendering is the only way to start a project.” With the rendering in hand, Andrew pitched the short timeline idea to Bryan Denhart, Mark Cardenas, and Josh Peavler at Allout Offroad. Not the type of people to shy away from a challenge, the crew signed up and plans were put in place.

With the clock ticking, several parts of the project would be ongoing simultaneously. To kick off the project, a truckload of parts was dropped off to be powdercoated in Prismatic Illusion Cherry. From there, the truck was stripped, and the bed, trim, and interior pieces were all dropped off at Extreme Customs for the custom paint process to begin. Using Axalta paint and products, the team transformed a blank gray canvas into a gothic masterpiece.

With the truck looking more like a cab and chassis, it was back to Allout Offroad, where the keys were handed to Josh Peavler to start stripping off the factory parts and getting the axles ready for paint and upgrades. Once the stock suspension was sitting in a pile on the floor, the front and rear axles were stripped and handed over to Eric Latigo at EAZY Paint Co. for an ample coating of Axalta Granite Crystal Metallic.

With the axles drying, Eric guided his paint gun over the frame, coating it in satin black and setting the stage for the suspension to be installed on a clean canvas.

When the torch was handed back to Josh Peavler, he set to work installing the freshly powdercoated McGaughy’s suspension. The kit was stretched from 8 to 10 inches using coil spacers front and rear, along with an adjustable track bar.

With the lift kit installed, the Hellwig sway bars and rear helper bags were put in place and plumbed in. The axles were reinstalled, and the new PML diff covers were installed along with Royal Purple gear oil. With the suspension almost complete, the new driveshafts were installed, along with the Fox reservoir shocks. To finish this part of the build, R1 rotors and pads were installed on the axles along with MGP caliper covers. Before the truck was put back on the ground, the RBP Blade wheels were mated to the Nitto Trail Grappler tires.

With the truck sitting on the ground, the team started on the front and worked their way backward. The first piece of the new look to be installed was the Showtime Metalworks front bumper and Rigid lighting. From there, the custom headlights from Retroshop were installed and wired before the RBP grille was put in place to finish off the front end. On the sides, the inner fenders were coated in Rhino Linings, and red rock lights from Rigid were installed. To make getting into and out of the truck easier, power steps from AMP Research were also added.

Under the bed, the Specialty Suspension air tanks, Viair compressors, and Kleinn Air Horns were mounted to a Showtime Metal Works assembly and plumbed in using Ekstensive fittings and hard lines.

To finish off the exterior, the bed was mounted and the rear Showtime Metalworks bumper was installed with additional Rigid LED lighting.

The inside of the bed couldn’t be left alone, either, so a stand-alone Kicker audio system was designed and mounted in a pair of Undercover Swing cases, running off a Kicker Bluetooth module. A BedRug was added to keep things looking tidy in the bed, and it was all secured using a Retrax Pro bedcover.

A truck this big couldn’t be all show and no go, so an Edge Juice Module and CTS2 touch screen programmer were added, along with an AFE Momentum HD air intake, AFE BladeRunner intercooler, and powdercoated intake manifold. The piping was replaced with MBRP pieces. To get the exhaust gases moving, a 5-inch Magnaflow system was added.

With the truck nearing completion, the keys were handed to Chad Jensen at Wired Customs who finished the project by installing the Quiet Ride sound-deadening kit, along with the audio system. With a truck this big, the audio had to match, so Kicker Q class speakers were installed throughout and powered by Kicker Q class amps mounted behind the rear seat along with a single Kicker 12-inch subwoofer.

To finish the build, Chad reinstalled the color-matched interior trim and dialed in the sound system.

When the dust settled and the clock stopped, 16 days had passed, the truck was complete, and 50 Shades was born.
