Blowers and the Blues: Madison, IL to Memphis, TN Roadtrip Action

Drag strip to drag strip? What is this, Drag Week? We left Gateway Motorsports Park and headed for Memphis International Raceway. Our drive took us past the famous St. Louis arch, which we could see just peeking over the overpasses as we made our way down IL-3.

The first group we caravanned with was an unlikely trio of Rat-Rat-Cat. And don’t bother writing in to tell us not to call Mark, Trevor, Johnny, Jeremy and Troy’s 1930 pickup and 1929 sedan rat rods because blah blah blah. They were surface rusted bare metal with various bits bungee-corded on. They were rat rods and we mean that in the best possible way. We loved them, and if you look at the photos you will love them too, especially when seen keeping close company with a spiffy silver Hellcat Challenger. “How’s that Hellcat?” we asked Trevor, who was riding shotgun, and he just got this dreamy look on his face that all Hellcat owners seem to get and didn’t answer. We left Trevor in his happy Hellcat daze and posed the Fords against a vintage gas station in Red Bud, Illinois. Make that photo black and white and it will look like it came out of our archives. Except maybe for the long shorts. By the way, don’t ask us which fellow is which in this group, even they just call each other, “Boy 1”, “Boy 2”, and so on.

After Red Bud and an Elvis impersonator, the next great scene on the trip was in Chester, birthplace of Popeye. Apparently the original Popeye cartoonist, Elzie Crisler Segar was a Chester resident, and there are statues, murals, and even a museum dedicated to the pugilistic sailor and his compatriots. We didn’t have any spinach, but we did meet up with another fictional character of sorts, a Mad Maxian 1973 Australian Falcon shipped here from Australia just for this tour. Grant Hodgson told us they’d tried once before, almost a decade ago, but didn’t make it the whole way. This is round two for the blown Cleveland and its Aussie crew.
