The 2015 FIA Formula 1 World Championship kicks off March 12 in Melbourne, Australia, and Mercedes will once again play a large role in the series. Replacing the SLS AMG GT, the Mercedes GT S will act as the new safety car for the events, while the C63 S wagon will serve as the medical car.

Research

Although it won't be part of the races, the Mercedes-AMG GT S has plenty of performance chops of its own. The GT S is an all-new model equipped with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine good for about 510 hp. With the help of a sports suspension with aluminum double-wishbone axles, the model can reach a top speed of 190 mph and hit 62 mph in 3.8 seconds. As part of its duties, the model is equipped with orange and green LED lights that give safety signals to drivers at different points in the race.

Although slightly slower to 62 mph, it provides plenty of space in the backseat to accommodate drivers and medics in an emergency. A large luggage compartment can be filled with emergency equipment including a defibrillator and respirator.
