Power Tour 2015: Dare To Be Even More Different-er

HOT ROD loves diversity—that goes without saying if you know anything about the mag or Power Tour. Still, what compels someone to bring one of the rarest, and weirdest, that has ever come out of Motown? This is a 1960 Edsel. A 9-passenger station wagon, of which there were only 59 made. This was Ford’s massive mistake to slot a new model between the Ford and Mercury.

1960 Edsel production never actually made it into 1960. Only 2,846 1960 models were ever made. Total Edsel sales for its three years were approximately 116,000—less than half the company's projected break-even point. The company lost $350 million, or the equivalent of $2,800,000,000 in 2015 dollars. Yikes!

So what compels someone to want, and then actually own one of these, and then bring it to numerous HOT ROD Power Tours over the years? We talked to Jan Harris, who, along with her husband Frank, own 12 Edsels including the Holy Grail of Edsels; the 1960 convertible. They hail from Griffin, Georgia.

Jan says she and her husband love to tour with their Edsels, and that the 9-passenger wagon is the perfect Power Tour car. This one has a Crap-O-Matic automatic and mildly hot rodded 292 Y-block. Frank is an automotive machinist, so messing with engines is ingrained into his psyche. Or something.

Jan and Frank bought this particular Edsel in 2007, and have been plying the highways and byways since about then.

As weird as bringing an Edsel wagon to Power Tour is, this is not the only one. We have seen 4-5 this year, but not another 1960. For your edification, we have included an image of a 1958, and a 1959 Edsel wagon, to round out Ford’s Edsel wagon offerings from the three years Edsels were made. And thanks to Jan and Frank for bringing out one of the rarest of Fords to the 2015 Power Tour.
